Dates On Albert Chain

Dates On Albert Chain Question: hi there. I have a gold watch Albert chain, every single link has the 9 375 stamp.

Watch ChainsComplete Price Guide to Watches

Price: $18.78 USD

On the dog clip there are the letters JT.

Only yesterday i discovered one single link with a different hallmark, i think it to be chester but next to that is a letter B not quite in a square surround, kind of roundish.

The ends of the B are sort of sweeping out a little to the left and I would love to know the age of this piece.

Hope someone can help :)
regards and thanks. Sonya

Lost Antique Hallmark

Lost Antique Hallmark Question: I took my great-grandmother’s ring (5 diamond ring set in platinum with 18ct gold shaft) to a reputable jeweler and goldsmiths.

How To Repair JewelryJewellery Manufacture and Repair

Price: $20.05 USD

I asked them to secure some of the stones as they were loose and to size it for my finger.

When I picked it up they had replaced two platinum clasps but had also thickened the shaft with new 18ct gold, thus losing the hallmarks.

I am very upset about this as I have no record or memory of the hallmarks.

Is there anyway the shaft can be restored so that the hallmarks can again be seen?

Has this affected the value of the ring?

I hope you can help, Lisa

What About Value?

G’day all and many thanks for dropping in to my website. There are many questions about antique and period Jewelry - NOT least the questions we receive on Hallmarks - But the NEXT biggest queries we get are ALWAYS about Value and Price.

  • “What’s it Worth?”
  • “How much does it cost to get Valued?”
  • “Do I have to send it away?”

So I am proud to be associated with the Jewelry Appraisal Center and to that end have decided to include a demo video for you to see for yourselves. So if you need more info, just follow their link…

Antique Bangle Bracelet Identification

Antique Bangle Bracelet Identification Question: I have a gold bangle bracelet that belonged to my mother or grandmother, w/a bit of engraving on the top.

Bracelets and BanglesWorld of Bracelets

Price: $40.95 USD

It is marked The D.E.R. Co. on the clasp and also the numbers 1/20.

I suspect it is not 14K gold as it would have been marked, maybe gold filled?

Any idea of age or value?

Thanks, Diane

July Birthstone

July is the month for Ruby (you lucky people) and also, if you can’t afford Ruby, or you just don’t like it, Cornelian, a beautiful red brown gemstone often used in Antique seals or Signet rings.

Ruby Gemstones Ruby, Sapphire & Emerald Buying Guide: How to Evaluate, Identify, Select & Care for These Gemstones (Newman Gem & Jewelry Series)

Price: $12.95 USD

Ruby was not isolated as being the red variety of Corundum (the blue ones are called Sapphires) until around 1800 or so. Before that, Red Spinels and even Garnets were also called Ruby.

The best Color is called ‘Pigeon’s Blood’ and top quality stones are often called ‘Burma Ruby’ or ‘Siam Ruby’ which these days does NOT refer to its origin.

A ‘Cat’s Eye’ or ‘Star’ Ruby are very expensive.

Ruby has always been valuable and therefore often copied. Man made Ruby are quite common now and very reasonably priced.

Many a soldier serving in Korea during the 1950’s bought Bright red gemstones from the locals, only to discover when they returned home from duty, that the treasure was actually cut from the red tail lights of their jeeps….

Buyer Beware!
