Mystery Ring: Where Is It From?

Mystery Ring: Where Is It From and How Old Is It?

I have this wonderful old ring, but I would love to find out more about it. It is made out of rose gold.

Both sides of the setting have leaf decorations (two little diamonds each side).

The main setting is in a marquise shape 37 mm by 11 mm so quite big. It is set with 5 stones down the middle and 32 small stones around the middle stones. The stones are rose cut diamonds, closed/foiled back.

The middle part with the 5 bigger stones is raised and is a separate piece that is fixed onto the main part of the ring.

It's all made out of rose gold, no white metal.

There are markings stamped onto the outside of the ring shank but I cannot decipher anything. Sorry about the confusing description. I would love to know anything about this ring.

It was sold to me as being from the late 1940s which would make it a re-make, but the seller admitted that they didn't know much about it. My local jeweler hadn't even seen foiled diamonds before so he couldn't help. Thanks for your suggestions, Cheers, Ines

Answer: G'day Ines and I must say it is lovely to hear from you. How are things in Western Oz...

I assume from your description the gems are Pave set around the central design and being Rose Cut I would have to say older than the 1940's. Are you sure they are Rose Cut and NOT just diamond chips? They are Diamonds, aren't they?

The reason the item is Foil backed is because the whole item is made of Rose gold.

Jewellers - Not wanting the colour to throw into the diamonds (the popular white gold settings were not in vogue then) used foil to shield the diamond from the gold, throwing a yellow or rose shade into the diamond - thereby reducing it's value. Again a clue to age being older than 1940's.

Shame you cannot read the Hallmarks and I know you do have a good eyeglass

Local and Modern Jewellers would be baffled by the Foil?

Without seeing and testing it - it is impossible to make a judgment - But personally - between old friends - I think it's a little older than between the wars... Take care and love to all.

DO NOT GET MAD

I love antiques, statues, etc. I am visiting India next year, if I buy a piece of Ivory can I take it out of India and get it into the United States?

Another question, I saw somewhere on the internet you can only take a certain amount of gifts out of India 0.00, is this correct? Or is it that if I buy my daughter a gold bracelet, I just have to pay the Tarif tax, if it is over that amount?
