There are so many things you need to consider when purchasing real diamonds, it can actually be a little scary. It was originally created to use a refractory material, which is impervious to heat and chemical damage. They were developed by scientists so that they could be used in lasers which are used in optical operations.
The next time you look at a necklace or ring made with cubic zirconia you will know that it's been made from a combination of zirconium and oxide which has been heated to the extreme and then cooled. The extreme temperature used to melt the zirconium is created by the use of a very large microwave. By doing this the center of the zirconium would melt but the outside would stay cool thus preventing the molten liquid from spilling out.

Recently manufacturers have been covering the cubic zirconia with a thin layer of carbon. Why should they do this? Because they want to make is even stronger.
