Best little handy book on the Market
April 25th, 2007 at 4:23 pmI have a ring with the hallmarks:
crown, 18, leopard’s head, S
All of the hallmarks are inside its own rounded square box. I believe these hallmarks to mean it is Gold (the crown), it is 18ct, made in London, but I do not have an index or a guide to determine the S which is the date letter mark. Can you help?
The ring itself is a gold band with 5 stones. Three Sapphires and two old european or mine cut diamonds….
Thanks so much!

G’day Jennifer and many thanks for your comments.
The Free Hallmarking Course available above will explaim more on the nature of the Hallmark, and in this case the problem lies with not knowing the correct SHAPE of the Stamp together with the STYLE of the Font or Date letter ‘S’.
For example: Does the rounded corners of the SHAPE also have a squiggly dip on the bottom? If it does then IF the letter ‘S’ is a Capital letter - the date would be 1913
One the other hand - if the SHAPE has the letter written in an ‘OLD ENGLISH style - then the date would be 1933.
If there is NO squiggly bit on the bottom but the date letter is in BOLD CAPITAL - then the date would be 1953
Notice the 20 year cycle here (explained more in the FREE Hallmarking Course available from the Top Menu of every page in the website.
Hope this helps…
May 16th, 2007 at 10:36 amI have been reading the free hallmarking course but it does not offer that information on the letter marks. Yes, it does say what is means but there’s no chart which associates a particular font, case and shape with the year. The “S” on my ring is a serif font much like Times New Roman. It is upper case. Not fancy. Not sans serif like helvetica or avant guard. In regards to the shape of the stamp, there is no squiggly line at the bottom. It is a consistant shape on all sides - a square shape with very smooth, rounded corners. According to the chart I found on the Birmingham Assay Office it would appear to be 1867…but is the chart the same for London? I sincerely appreciate all the information you have given me! But is seems I am still missing one very important link!
May 17th, 2007 at 11:37 pmG’day again Jennifer and many thanks for your follow up information.
If the stamp has rounded corners much like the stamp with the letter ‘E’ we use on the top of our website (but with the letter ‘S’ in that shape - the date letter is 1953.
The Birmingham mark is NOT the same as the other assay offices, with the mark for 1867 being completely oval - not square.
You need to buy the book (not expensive) by clicking on the image above. It is shipped by Amazon and will get to you quite quickly.
May 18th, 2007 at 4:35 pmI ended up writing to the assay off of London and emailed them photos of my ring and the hallmarks. They confirmed the date letter mark for 1833. Thanks for your help though.
