Dates On Albert Chain

Dates On Albert Chain Question: hi there. I have a gold watch Albert chain, every single link has the 9 375 stamp.

Watch ChainsComplete Price Guide to Watches

Price: $18.78 USD

On the dog clip there are the letters JT.

Only yesterday i discovered one single link with a different hallmark, i think it to be chester but next to that is a letter B not quite in a square surround, kind of roundish.

The ends of the B are sort of sweeping out a little to the left and I would love to know the age of this piece.

Hope someone can help :)
regards and thanks. Sonya

Answer: G’day Sonya and many thanks for your query.

Your Albert sounds lovely, and I hope you will keep it and pass it on, because it has everything going for it.

If you are NOT able to wear it around your neck or use it on a watch, you can always double it around your wrist as a bracelet.

Makes a nice item - especially if it is ‘Rose Gold.’

The FULL UK British Hallmark is a great sign of quality, even though it is only made in 9 carat (375) gold. The 375 is the International decimal quality in part-per-thousand.

The JT is the Maker’s Mark much like H.S&S is for H. Samuel and Sons - a large jewelry store in Britain. This has no bearing as to value really.

You are missing some of the information in the Hallmark.

Are you saying the chain has one hallmark BUT one link is for Chester? or is all of the chain stamped with the Chester hallmark?

This makes a difference as to identifying the age, as the only letter you have given me is a ‘B’ but I don’t know from your description if it is in Uppercase - lowercase - Old English style or Italics etc.

These all have to be checked as does the SHAPE of the stamp. I need to know if it is round, oval, shield shaped or square with the cornets cut off. Sometimes there is a ‘Squiggly’ bit on the bottom.

There is a great FREE Hallmarking Course here:

which will help you understand UK Hallmarks.

You might also like to add this query to my blog at http://how2valuejewelry.com/ as other may have had a similar problem. Can’t hurt anyway and who knows what answers you may get.

Hope this helps…

G’day again Sonya and many thanks for your quick follow-up and the image file.

I went to the picture you have online and it looks like the Chester Hallmark for circa 1885 - so the Chain would be a classic ‘Rose Gold’ Victorian Albert - You lucky thing!

Hope this helps, but you need to get it appraised before you regret not recording the information.

The Jewelry Appraisal Center at: http://www.online-jewelry-appraisals.com/ will allow you to do a low cost appraisal yourself - that way it never leaves your possession so it’s quite safe. You can upload a photo of the item also before printing it onto your printer at home.
