Identifying Information

A World of Necklaces: Africa, Asia, Oceania, AmericaQuestion: Hello. I am hoping that you can help me to identify the manufacturer and approximate date of a garnet necklace.

The reverse of the necklace is marked STG.SIL (all upper-case) and FBW (all upper-case). After some research, I believe that the silver hallmark may indicate that this was manufacturer in Australia or NZ…… Continue reading Garnet Necklace

Replacing prongs and tips…

Question: My wedding set is 60 years old, it was my grandmothers.

I recently took it in for repair when the band broke and decided at that time to have all the prongs and tips replaced.

I have been greatly disturbed since receiving the ring back as it appears that 2 of the prongs on the large diamond are not done correctly. One is a bit off center and the other has a slight ball shape to it instead of the normal prong look.

Also on the 6 small diamonds in the band the tips are uneven looking and some even seem to be off center as well.

My question is, is this what happens when you have prongs and tips replaced?

Or is this more likely bad work?

I can imagine that it is not easy to add gold to these tiny little tips.

As you might see I am quite passive, I did question the large diamond prongs at the jeweler and the two people behind the counter said they saw nothing.

I truly see what I stated and I wonder if I should push it by seeing another jeweler?… Continue reading Repair On Antique Jewelry

Diamond Engagement Ring – Question from a Client

Monday, September 25, 2006 12:58 No Comments

My sister recently bought a wedding set on Ebay.

While looking thru the odd things on ebay she happen to come across this set. It was not listed under jewelry but instead under mythical or something to that effect. Now she only paid 50.00 for the set.

When she took it to have it sized she was asked to put in an amount for insurance. She told the gentleman she had no idea what to put down because she had not had it appraised. He looked it over for a minute or so and told her to put 1,200.00.

The rings looks to… Continue reading Diamond Engagement Ring - Question from a Client

mystery ring: where is it from, how old is it?

Hello David, How are you (and Patricia)? It’s great to see a familiar name here.

I have this wonderful old ring, but I would love to find out more about it. It is made out of rose gold.

Both sides of the setting have leaf decorations (two little diamonds each side).

The main setting is in a marquise shape 37 mm by 11 mm so quite big. It is set with 5 stones down the middle and 32 small stones around the middle stones. The stones are rose cut diamonds, closed/foiled back.

The middle part with the 5 bigger stones is raised and is… Continue reading mystery ring: where is it from, how old is it?
